I love travelling. I love the journey, the destination and even returning home. However anyone who knows me well knows that I can’t stand packing. I procrastinate and it takes me ages to even get started. Often getting started is the most challenging part of a journey. Getting your social media marketing strategy off the ground is no exception. If you want to enjoy successful results you have to take that first step. You don’t have to be a success to start but you have to start to be a success.

Start social media marketing success

A good friend of mine describes marketing your business with social media as a marathon. The race actually started about six years ago and there are still a few businesses that haven’t even laced up their running shoes yet.

You may have already run a few miles (such as mastering Facebook or Twitter), but may just need a nudge in the right direction to get started with some others. There are so many relationships, conversations and opportunities out there that you can’t afford to miss out on. So let’s get started. Here are some links to help you take that challenging, yet important first step:

Google+

Already the second largest social network on the planet Google Plus also enjoys integration with Google’s entire suite of products and applications. In my opinion it is the most important social media profile your business should have.

Pinterest

There is a common misconception that Pinterest is for women posting images of shoes, fitness and recipes. Pinterest is an amazing business resource. Even if you aren’t a particularly active ‘pinner’ you can follow thought leaders and experts in your (or any) industry for tips, news and even strategies. Plus it’s fun and visually appealing thanks to some of the best images on the internet.

LinkedIn

You may already have a LinkedIn account. It is digital business networking at its best. Has you business got a profile there yet? Have you joined or participated in any relevant groups at all? LinkedIn might be an important medium for career development, but it is also one of the most credible sources of content. It also presents significant branding opportunities.

Twitter

Twitter is still my favorite social network. It’s like a massive ongoing text message-a-thon. I use it to learn, share and connect every day. I have established genuine relationships and have acquired countless leads through Twitter. If you aren’t using Twitter for business you are almost certainly missing out on opportunities.

Tumblr

Tumblr is a great place to start if you have been considering a blog for your business. Because it is a cross between a social networking site and a blogging platform it is ideal for sharing your ideas and your content. Tumblr is also an awesome source of content to share on social media.

Facebook

Facebook is a common place to start, but if you haven’t set up a business page yet let’s start right now. Even if you don’t want to use Facebook for yourself (personally), you don’t have to. You can hide/ mute your personal profile if you really want to and just use Facebook to expose your business to the largest social media audience around.
