Whether you intend to use Twitter for business or personal use it can appear quite daunting at first. It can even seem like another world with it’s own language. Twitter is not a technology, it’s a conversation. So how can you be part of that conversation and get the most out of Twitter? Fortunately Twitter has an excellent help centre with valuable Twitter tips to help understand how to join the conversation.

What to tweet?
When you first consider using Twitter it’s not unusual to wonder: ‘What should I tweet?’ There are all sorts of things you can say in 140 characters (that’s all you’ve got), however the best tweets offer some sort of value. As you are composing a tweet please consider if it will be valuable to the reader.

Twitter tips from Twitter
These tips are nothing new. People have been wondering the same things and asking the same questions for years as they join the conversation. All I’ve done here is curated some helpful links with valuable Twitter tips to help understand how to join the conversation.
The story of a tweet
For a better understanding of what a tweet is, where tweets live and ideas about what to tweet about, this link is a great starting place. All tweets are global and have the potential to reach people in ways you’ve never dreamed of.
What is a Retweet (RT)?
For starters Retweets (or RT’s) are a great way to share stuff that your followers (or target audience) may find interesting. They also give credit to the original tweeter and can even help to build relationships and start conversations.
What are @replies and mentions?
I consider @replies and mentions one of the most important aspects of Twitter. They are the first things you should check if you are interested in ‘The conversation’. I reckon you’ve got a better chance of getting my attention by mentioning me in a tweet than emailing me or sending me a text message.

Customising your profile
This is an important step if you want followers. Think about it, would you take interest in someone in real life if they didn’t show you their face, didn’t reveal much about themselves, or let you know how to contact them.
Using hashtags on Twitter
Using hashtags on Twitter effectively can help you reach way beyond your followers. It is also a great way to find information, people and more. Think of hashtags as categories or headings for the stuff you (& others) are interested in.
Conclusion
These links are just five valuable Twitter tips to help understand how to join the conversation.
