Collaboration is essential for success in business. As King Solomon said: Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed (Ecclesiastes 4:9 NLT). Actually each collaborator adds to the value of a project and I am excited about a project two of my fellow SteamFeed authors are collaborating on called ‘Ready, Set, Podcast’. Dynamic duo Mallie Hart and Brooke Ballard have been collaborating and building their respective brands together for years, however their co-hosted podcast launches on January 5th 2015.

Brooke and Mallie live and work over 8oo miles apart and have been collaborating with folks as far away as me all the way over here in Australia. Digital technology and social media is enabling businesses like yours to work together anywhere, anytime. You’re probably already using some platforms with excellent social media collaboration tools. So to help get your next project started here are some ideas about how to use social media collaboration to build your brand.
Four simple ways to use social media to collaborate
1. Facebook Groups
I reckon Facebook Groups is the best thing about Facebook. I am a member and founder of a couple of groups that are the main reasons I visit and use Facebook. It’s easy to start a group and invite the members that you want to collaborate with. You have control of who can join and contribute to the group and by default group members receive a notification when there is new activity.
2. Pinterest Group Boards
What a great way to share ideas. Visually. I use Pinterest like a graphic filing or bookmarking system for great content. You can start either a public or private group board, invite the contributors and use it in multiple ways to collaborate. Some ideas might include: A secret board with links to content relating to your project, ideas from multiple sources, inspiration for content creation and so much more.
3. Twitter Chat
Thousands of people are collaborating on Twitter right now as you read this. A Twitter Chat is organised around an easy, relevant hashtag to tie a conversation together. A well organised Twitter Chat can become a global think tank in the public domain. You can easily refer back to the conversation in the future by using the hashtag.
4. Google+ Hangouts
This is by far one of the best ways to use social media to collaborate on a project. You have face-to-face contact, multiple collaborators can join in, you can share your screen and even record it using Hangouts on air. You can access Hangouts from anywhere with an internet connection on a phone, tablet or desktop. Let’s even forget that this is social media and just regard it as an essential collaboration tool.
A great way to create content
One of the best uses for social media collaboration is content development. In his excellent article: From Social Networks to Collaboration Networks: The Next Evolution of Social Media for Business Karl Moore suggests that businesses need to stop thinking of social networks as just another venue for marketing and start utilising social media to drive business forward. If your business isn’t at least using social media to collaborate to develop content you could potentially lose market share to competitors who are already.
A cheeky example of social media collaboration
Using our phones, Google+, email, Twitter and iMovie Mallie, Brooke and I collaborated to create a little video to promote this blog post and for a bit of fun.
Conclusion
Marketing isn’t just about telling the market about your product or service. It’s about creating value for the market. Digital and social media are just making it easier to create and deliver that value.
