Dogs are great. Especially my dog Buddy. He’s featured in quite a few posts here on Social Strategies and he is an expert at communicating, relationship building, and having fun. After almost four months living more than 700 kilometres (450 miles) apart, Buddy and I were reunited this week. So here are three things my dog taught me about social media marketing and how his approach may be able to help improve your results.
Sure he is highly motivated by food (all Labradors are), but Buddy does things for the right reasons. It’s not all about him, it’s all about you. He really knows how to give to receive and I reckon social media marketers could learn a lot from his tactics.
Communicating
Buddy is an expert and getting the message across. He knows that communication is a two way street and he engages his audience and really interacts with them. His communication tactics are so genuine and sincere that once I tied him up outside the pub to sneak in for a cheeky beer and when I returned he had convinced people at an outside table to give him their $15 steak sandwich.
Relationship Building
Without relationships social media wouldn’t be ‘social’, it would just be ‘media’. Building valuable relationships is vital to any social media marketer’s success. Buddy doesn’t just bond with his immediate prospects and customers (me, and my family). He extends his relationships to brand advocates (anyone he thinks that might feed him), colleagues & associates (the other dogs at the dog beach) and thought leaders (the vet). He recognizes that a broad set of solid relationships is important and will help him achieve his goals. Plus he loves being social.
Having fun
Buddy really knows how to have fun (see image below). You can easily tell when he is enjoying himself (his tail actually starts rotating) and he is infectious. Marketers often post content that is boring. Facebook is actually punishing boring content now. The most infectious (& viral) content is almost always in the spirit of something fun. People want Buddy in their life because he is fun to be around and has a truly positive spirit. Wouldn’t that be great if that’s how your fans & followers felt about your brand?

Conclusion
I’ll be honest here. I am just so pleased to have Buddy back in my life that I simply couldn’t write about anything else this week. I hope that you have enjoyed reading some of my observations and hearing about Buddy’s antics. I also hope that this will help marketers have more fun, improve communication with their audience and develop deeper relationships.
